This is Justin, sending out a test message to the new scagc-l list. You should, in theory, have received a signup message sometime recently, telling you a little about the new list. We've moved from Princeton to AOL, mainly because Kwellend (the list admin) switched jobs, and Princeton isn't willing to let the list live there indefinitely after that. Kwellend has moved everyone from the old list to the new, which is why you got that signup message. Along the way, due to the substantial demand, we've switched things over to being a reflector mailing list instead of a weekly digest. Kwellend is investigating whether we can produce a digest version for those who want to get fewer messages; I'd appreciate hearing from people who want this. I'll need some kind of digest for the postally-connected anyway, so we can probably use the same mechanism for both. Have some patience; it may take a little time to figure out how to do it. As with the old Grand Council Chronicle, this list is "moderated" by the members of the Council. Practically speaking, this means that only members of the Council can post directly. Anyone else who posts will get bounced over to me. I *strongly* urge any non-Council members who want to post to send their submissions to other members of the Council. I don't want to be deluged by messages, and if I am, I may well get very reluctant to post *any*. Any member of the Council has the right and power to forward messages to the list; work through them. A few guidelines: -- With this now being a reflector list, you can now respond instantly to anything posted. I urge a little restraint. First of all, most of us have Real Lives, and don't want to spend four hours a day working on Council email. (Don't laugh; I *have* spent as much as two hours a day on the Membership Working Group at times.) Pause, see if anyone else has already said what you want to say, and spend a little time composing your response. This will both cut the volume a little, and make for better discourse. (And yes, I know this applies to me as much as anyone.) -- Along the same lines, we need to be a little more careful in phrasing. This new list, while technically moderated, is effectively *un*moderated for members of the Council. That means that flamewars are going to be much easier to start. I haven't had to use my powers as Editor much, but I have used them occasionally. Now, I'm out of the loop. That means that it is your own responsibility to keep the conversation civil. As a rule, flamewars are *always* harmful to productive discourse (although they frequently make one feel better), so try hard to avoid them... As I write this, I'm about to head off for the weekend. No warrantees are made that everything works right yet. If there are problems, we'll deal with them next week. Good luck. With a little care, this new list may make for a considerably more productive Council. But it *will* require care, on everyone's part... -- Justin GC Secretary Random Quote du Jour: "Puncture a soccer ball for God and Country. Okay, here's the scoop, as described by Kwellend: >To set the list to send digests, send a letter >to listserv@listserv.aol.com with a body of: > >set scagc-l mail digest > >To turn off digests, the command appears to be: > >set scagc-l mail nodigest > >That should do it. Try that out, and tell me whether it seems to be working or not. (The theory is that you should get the list as more-or-less daily digests, instead of message-by-message.) Also -- the list turns out not to be quite fully up and running yet; Kwellend turned out not to have some necessary information, which I have now supplied. (Namely the list of who is or isn't on the Council.) He's working on setting all the Council members up as "editors" of the list; this should be ready soon. Expect to see a test message or two when it is... -- Justin Random Quote du Jour: Re: The Perks of Being Royalty "You'd be surprised how many times six months can look like an eternity, especially at 4 AM when the seneschal of the Shire of Agita is calling because the herald is making faces at her and won't stop." -- Ariel of Caer Myrddin From owner-scagc-l@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Mon Sep 25 23:14:46 1995 Return-Path: Encoding: 37 TEXT X-Mailer: Microsoft Mail V3.0 Date: Mon, 25 Sep 1995 22:08:00 PDT Reply-To: SCA Grand Council Discussion list Sender: SCA Grand Council Discussion list From: Steve Muhlberger Subject: Legal liability To: Multiple recipients of list SCAGC-L Let this be a test message. The following is part of a personal message from a lawyer who used to be in the SCA (and who may be again). I've been intending to send it along for a while. >>> I'm glad someone else appreciates the fact that SCA is overdoing the "fear of legal liability" number. The reality is that there is absolutely no way of being certain that someone won't initiate a law suit, although one can reduce the chances of one succeeding. Non-lawyers often think that there's some magic way of avoiding law suits: most of first year law school consists of first year students going through culture shock as they learn that the law is uncertain and adjust to live with probabilities. Some things are probably intrisincially too high risk: I've always thought that combat archery was too legally risky ... if something goes wrong, despite all the precautions, there's no way a court could be pursuaded this is a sensible activity. [Note from Finnvarr: I am less pessimistic about the dangers of combat archery of the golf-tube-arrow variety] On the other hand, SCA-style foot combat has risks similar to football and hockey, so one can make some pretty convincing analogies that I think would be a pursuasive to a court. Horses in SCA I don't know enough about to judge the risks, but presumably there could be analogies made to other equestrian sports in many contexts.
